As part of our involvement in the Melbourne Metro Tunnel Project (MMTP) a critical evaluation of the Magnetic Field attenuation properties of the Metro Tunnel Project’s (MTP) tunnel lining Segments was made. PowerEarth supported the specialist EMI team from the MMTP in performing tests at the project’s Segment Manufacturing Facility in Ravenhall, Victoria, in May 2020. This was a leading-edge R&D project to determine if any benefits may be gained through complex construction methods novel to the industry, this would be particularly useful in high density areas of Third Party (Magnetic Field) Sensitive Receiver locations.
Multiple types of varied segments were tested, including the existing traditional construction methodology through to ‘transformer steel’ fibres at various densities. The testing was performed across 6 Source Frequencies measured in all 3 Components (X, Y and Z) and across 3 Sensor positions (Centreline, Quarter and Edge) to measure ‘spill’. This testing will now inform further research and analysis to determine if benefits can be gained.
Some of this analysis will be through detailed calculation using FABEL traction modelling and EMC CALC 3D software of our partners ENOTRAC. This worlds best software will take care of the complex dynamic traction current and EMC field predictions.
