The West Gate Tunnel project includes a 4 km outbound tunnel and a 2.8 km inbound tunnel (each with 3 lanes), as well as major upgrades to roads, freeways and bridges to manage traffic either side of the tunnel. PowerEarth was engaged to assess arc hazards for Transurban’s 66 kV, 22 kV and LV equipment at the tunnel’s main intake substation.
PowerEarth’s study considered the potential arc hazards during typical activities like inspections, operation, testing, maintenance and repair. For each activity, the risk of arc occurring, the ability of the switchgear to contain the effects of an arc and the incident energies were assessed. The report identified the primary and other risk control measures as well as the required PPE for each activity.
